I got heavily into road biking as a teen. Tubulars were expensive, and I had little cash, so I learned to fix my own bike. When I moved to Ottawa at 20, the bike became my transportation and livelihood as I started couriering. That’s where I discovered the underground culture of avid bikers in the city core. Working on my own bikes led me into road repair—when pay depended on speed, fixing my bike anytime, anywhere, was a must.
I spent long hours learning wheel building from my mentor and close friend. We’d ride, fine-tune, and experiment—making tools and parts when nothing else worked. There’s always a way.
The Origins of Our Shop
In 1999, Dr. Planetman’s Cycle Service Emporium opened on a shoestring budget. We worked long hours creating a unique space. Then the bikes started coming. By closing time, the shop was full. The ride was short—just a few years—but wild and worth it. On my bike, I feel like a silver bullet. Adrenaline sharpens my focus. I just exist in the moment. That excitement has never faded.
